Abstract

This article is the first investigation of causal cognition in a theoretical framework that systematically contrasts analog and digital mental representations. Talmy has developed a refined theoretical framework for digital cognition with four cumulative levels: discreteness, categoriality, recombination, and emergence. This framework has thus far mainly been applied to the (spoken and signed) language-articulatory realm. This article is the first to investigate a prominent theory of causal cognition, force dynamics (also originally proposed by Talmy), through the lens of four-level mental digitalness. Exemplified with the meanings underlying the prepositions because of and despite, it is demonstrated how the conceptual primitives of basic force-dynamic patterns can be meaningfully interpreted within a mental-digitalness framework. For these conceptual primitives it is argued: (i) that they are all digital; (ii) that some extend up to degree one (discreteness); (iii) that some extend up to degree two (categoriality); (iv) that they also involve degree three (in a thus far unidentified form of digital recombination); and that (v) none involve degree four (emergence). It is additionally examined how basic digital force-dynamic patterns can combine with analog mental information. Implications for spatial and numerical cognition well as for cognitive linguistics and cognitive science in general are discussed.
