Methane as a selectivity booster in the arc-discharge synthesis of endohedral fullerenes: selective synthesis of the single-molecule magnet Dy$_2$TiC@C$_{80}$ and its congener Dy$_2$TiC$_2$@C$_{80}$

Junghans, Katrin; Schlesier, Christin; Kostanyan, Aram; Samoylova, Nataliya A; Deng, Qingming; Rosenkranz, Marco; Schiemenz, Sandra; Westerström, Rasmus; Greber, Thomas; Büchner, Bernd; Popov, Alexey A (2015). Methane as a selectivity booster in the arc-discharge synthesis of endohedral fullerenes: selective synthesis of the single-molecule magnet Dy$_2$TiC@C$_{80}$ and its congener Dy$_2$TiC$_2$@C$_{80}$. Angewandte Chemie (International ed. in English), 54(45):13411-13415.

Abstract

The use of methane as a reactive gas dramatically increases the selectivity of the arc-discharge synthesis of M-Ti-carbide clusterfullerenes (M=Y, Nd, Gd, Dy, Er, Lu). Optimization of the process parameters allows the synthesis of Dy$_2$TiC@C$_{80}$-I and its facile isolation in a single chromatographic step. A new type of cluster with an endohedral acetylide unit, M$_2$TiC$_2$@C$_{80}$, is discovered along with the second isomer of M$_2$TiC@C$_{80}$. Dy$_2$TiC@C$_{80}$-(I,II) and Dy$_2$TiC$_2$@C$_{80}$-I are shown to be single-molecule magnets (SMM), but the presence of the second carbon atom in the cluster Dy$_2$TiC$_2$@C$_{80}$ leads to substantially poorer SMM properties.

TrendTerms

TrendTerms displays relevant terms of the abstract of this publication and related documents on a map. The terms and their relations were extracted from ZORA using word statistics. Their timelines are taken from ZORA as well. The bubble size of a term is proportional to the number of documents where the term occurs. Red, orange, yellow and green colors are used for terms that occur in the current document; red indicates high interlinkedness of a term with other terms, orange, yellow and green decreasing interlinkedness. Blue is used for terms that have a relation with the terms in this document, but occur in other documents.
You can navigate and zoom the map. Mouse-hovering a term displays its timeline, clicking it yields the associated documents.
