Zur magischen Literatur im christlichen Äthiopien

Bogdan, Burtea (2014). Zur magischen Literatur im christlichen Äthiopien. In: Elliesie, Hatem. Multidisciplinary Views on the Horn of Africa. Köln: Rdiger Kppe Verlag, 131-148.

Abstract

This contribution presents an overview of the most important works on magic in Ethiopian Christian literature. After some remarks on the general use and the terminological difficulties of defining the term magic (“Magie”), the introductory chapter presents a long but not exhaustive list of terms used for “Magie” in Ethiopian literature. The following chapter deals with the transmission of the best known magic motives and stories of Late Antiquity such as of Solomon, Alexander or St. Sisinios and, further, with the polemic Christian works against magic practices. The third chapter tries to classify the magic literature according to different criteria, such as the religious affiliation of the practitioners, the function of the texts and the content of the texts. The last chapter presents a classification of magic objects and shows two illustrations of them.

TrendTerms

TrendTerms displays relevant terms of the abstract of this publication and related documents on a map. The terms and their relations were extracted from ZORA using word statistics. Their timelines are taken from ZORA as well. The bubble size of a term is proportional to the number of documents where the term occurs. Red, orange, yellow and green colors are used for terms that occur in the current document; red indicates high interlinkedness of a term with other terms, orange, yellow and green decreasing interlinkedness. Blue is used for terms that have a relation with the terms in this document, but occur in other documents.
You can navigate and zoom the map. Mouse-hovering a term displays its timeline, clicking it yields the associated documents.
