Abstract

Mit Verweis auf eine kürzlich publizierte Phase-II-Studie wird die intratumorale Thermotherapie mit Nanopartikeln verstärkt als neue Therapieoption beim Glioblastom proklamiert. Eine genauere Betrachtung dieser Studie zeigt jedoch, dass weder Sicherheit noch Wirksamkeit dieser Therapie nachgewiesen wurden. Die Zulassung als Medizinprodukt ist zudem nicht mit einer Prüfung der Wirksamkeit verbunden. Kontrollierte Studien sind erforderlich, um den Stellenwert dieser Therapie beurteilen zu können.

Based on recently published phase II data, intratumoral thermotherapy with nanoparticles is increasingly being advocated as a novel treatment option for glioblastoma. Careful assessment of this report, however, reveals that neither safety nor efficacy were demonstrated. The registration as a medicinal product per se is not associated with a confirmation of efficacy. Controlled clinical trials are necessary to demonstrate efficacy of this treatment strategy.
