Glacier inventory

Paul, Frank (2017). Glacier inventory. In: Richardson, Douglas; Castree, Noel; Goodchild, Michael F; Kobayashi, Audrey; Liu, Weidong; Marston, Richard A. The international encyclopedia of geography : people, the earth, environment, and technology. Chichester: Wiley, online.

Abstract

A glacier inventory is a key input dataset for many glacier-related calculations. In general, it covers all glaciers in a country and provides data about each individual glacier (e.g., name, coordinates, area, length, mean elevation). Historically this information has been derived from aerial photography and topographic maps, but today it is usually derived from satellite imagery and digital elevation models (DEMs) using geographic information systems (GIS). As the latter provide the respective glacier outlines in a digital vector format, glacier specific changes can be calculated reliably. A globally complete glacier inventory in vector format has only recently been compiled by a community effort. This new dataset (the Randolph Glacier Inventory) was heavily used for a wide range of calculations in support of the fifth assessment report (AR5) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
