The first question in ecology: How many are there?

Kéry, M M M. The first question in ecology: How many are there? 2008, University of Zurich, Faculty of Science.

Abstract

This thesiss documents my scientific achievments during seven years (mid-2001 until mid-2008. It contains contributions to the demographic analysis of (1) single populations, (2) metapopulations and metacommunities and (2) to the principles of design and analysis of demographic field studies. Throughout my work, I have strived for a rigorously hierarchical view of my observations, i.e. I always try conceptually to segregate observations into contributions from the biological state process on the one hand, and of the observation process on the other.
