Abstract

Mo Yan 莫言 (born 1956) is one of the most important writers of China’s contemporary literary scene. His work, characterized by its quantative, formal, and conceptual richness, is difficult to define in terms of a particular aesthetic. The aim of this article is to shed additional light on Mo Yan’s works by reassessing his contribution to the (re)construction of Chinese literature at the end of the Maoist period. A closer examination of the author’s treatment of nature in a short story entitled Touming de hongluobo (A Transparent Radish), published in 1985, will reconsider the “authenticity” of Mo Yan’s writing on its own merit, an authenticity that allowed Chinese literature from the 80s onwards to turn the page on social realism and to engage in new directions.
