Independent Yet Harmonious: Some Remarks on the Relationship between the Theology of Peter Martyr Vermigli (1499-1562) and John Calvin

Baschera, Luca (2011). Independent Yet Harmonious: Some Remarks on the Relationship between the Theology of Peter Martyr Vermigli (1499-1562) and John Calvin. Church History and Religious Culture, 91(1-2):43-57.

Abstract

The essay deals with the question about the relationship between Peter Martyr Vermigli's and John Calvin's theology. Comparing their doctrine of predestination and justification, there emerge both points of contact and divergences: whereas their teaching coincided in its content, their method and terminology could differ even significantly, not least because Vermigli – more often than Calvin – integrated into his theological works concepts and distinctions characteristic of the Aristotelian and scholastic tradition. Thus, while remaining a loyal and esteemed ally of Calvin during his whole career as a Reformed theologian, Vermigli always retained his own theological profile.
