Attitudinal ambivalence

Jonas, Klaus; Ziegler, René (2007). Attitudinal ambivalence. In: Hewstone, Miles. The scope of social psychology: Theory and applications. New York: Psychology Press, 29-42.

Abstract

(from the book) This chapter focuses on the issue of attitudinal ambivalence, which may result from evaluating attitude objects as both positive and negative simultaneously. The chapter discusses definitional aspects pertaining to ambivalence and different forms of attitudinal ambivalence as well as different ways of measuring the concept. The authors then review research on attitudinal ambivalence as a moderator of the attitude-behaviour relationship, showing the theoretical and applied implications of this work as well as the interrelationship between different moderating effects of ambivalence. The enhanced insight this gives into attitudes, attitude change, and the attitude-behaviour relationship is discussed, as well as additional facets of research on attitudinal ambivalence. The chapter ends by drawing conclusions and sketching lines of future research on attitudinal ambivalence. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2012 APA, all rights reserved) (book)
