Cephalopods include some of the most iconic fossils such as ammonites and belemnites. Accordingly, palaeontological research on cephalopods has a long history. Yet surprisingly, the earliest evolution of the clade is not well understood and partly controversial. Many aspects of the palaeontology of early Palaeozoic cephalopods (nautiloids) are poorly studied, such as phylogenetic relationships between different groups, palaeoecology and taxonomy in general.
