Based on all of his known works, this paper discusses Petrus Alfonsi’s understanding of rational knowledge and contrasts it with its application in the religious argument of his Dialogus, additionally considering his self-presentation and how it might influence his texts. Petrus’s reflections on the rational disciplines reveal his awareness that they only partially overlapped with the traditional subjects of instruction as well as his efforts to include the Arabic-speaking sciences in the canon of the arts.
