Tracks : The Arlberg and the Culture of Skiing

Dettling, Sabine; Tschofen, Bernhard (2014). Tracks : The Arlberg and the Culture of Skiing. Bregenz: Bertolini.

Abstract

What is it that inspires modern man to strap skis to his feet and venture out on long treks into the cold and snow? Tracks tells the story of this “miracle in white.” The fascination for skiing, which conversely combines tranquility, simplicity, and solitude with competition, combat, and mechanization, left deep tracks in the snowy mountains of the Arlberg. Indeed, no other alpine region is as influenced by this unparalleled alliance of athletics, tourism, and lifestyle as the Arlberg – a name, which has reached global recognition and is synonymous with the very act of alpine skiing. In this work, new research and unpublished images and materials bring the fascinating history of Arlberg ski culture to life.
