Abstract
Medea figures in some of the works of Robert Graves. She is one of the main characters in his retelling of the saga of the Argonauts, The Golden Fleece (1944). This book can be read as precursor to his great work, The White Goddess (1948). Both books deal with the relation between the poet and the white goddess or Muse. The white goddess gives the gift of poetry, but in the end asks the death of her male worshipper. On the one hand, it is possible to interpret The Golden Fleece’s Medea as a predecessor of the white goddess; on the other hand, this Medea resembles also the figure of the trickster.
