Ralf Dahrendorf

Rössel, Jörg (2017). Ralf Dahrendorf. In: Turner, Brian S. Wiley-Blackwell Encyclopedia of Social Theory. London: Wiley Blackwell, 1-2.

Abstract

Ralf Dahrendorf (b.1929 in Hamburg, d.2009 in Cologne) was a German-British sociologist, liberal politician, and public intellectual. His work combines theoretical and empirical contributions to sociological conflict theory with subtle analyses of contemporary society and politics. Dahrendorf developed his conflict-theoretic approach based on a critical examination of Parsons's and Marx's theoretical approaches. In contrast to Parsons's consensus model of society, he suggested a conflict model as the more fertile alternative for the empirical study of sociological problems. In contrast to Marx, he did not perceive class conflicts as the necessary and all-embracing type of social conflicts in modern societies, and thus developed a more general approach to different forms of social conflicts.
