Abstract

Glaciers are perennial masses of ice, firn, and snow, which flow down slopes in cold regions. Their shrinking in most parts of the world is a key indication of rapid if not accelerating climate change at a global scale. More than a century of systematic research and observation in combination with modern technologies – especially digital terrain information and satellite images – provide a basis for model projections of their future development. Even with moderate scenarios of global warming, many glaciers are already likely to shrink dramatically if not even vanish within this century. This process will substantially reduce landscape diversity and change hazard conditions in high mountains; it will also contribute to sea level rise and change the seasonality of water supply in large areas. Strategies for adaptation and mitigation must be developed with high priority.
