Abstract
Im Jahre 2001, nachdem Mehrheiten der Bevölkerungen ihre Zustimmung gaben, wurden das Entlebuch und die Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn-Region von der UNESCO als Modellregionen für eine nachhaltige Entwicklung anerkannt. Die Dissertation geht den Fragen nach, weshalb die Bevölkerungen für das Projekt stimmten, welche Rolle verbale und visuelle Bilder dabei spielten und wie das abstrakte Konzept der nachhaltigen Entwicklung den Bevölkerungen präsentiert wurde. Bildanalysen ermöglichen, die nicht immer diskursiv bewussten Werte der Bildproduzierenden zu erkennen. In der Studie wurden alle publizierten Bilder relevanter Medien inhaltsanalytisch anhand von Kategorien der Raumaneignung untersucht. Qualitative Zugänge und Interviews mit Vertretern der Bildproduktion und - rezeption vertieften die Erkenntnisse. In einem transdisziplinären Forschungsteil wurden anhand einer Wanderausstellung die Forschungsergebnisse mit den Sichten der betroffenen Bevölkerungen konfrontiert. Die Resultate offenbaren einen deutlichen Kontrast von Innen- und Aussensicht. Speziell die Biosphäre Entlebuch wurde aus der Region heraus nicht als idyllische Naturlandschaft, sondern als relativ moderner Wirtschafts- und Lebensraum gezeigt. Verständlich wird diese Präsentationsweise, wenn der soziohistorische Kontext, insbesondere die Auswirkungen der Moorschutzinitiative von 1987, berücksichtigt werden. Abschliessend weist die Dissertation Wege auf, wie in verwandten Projekten Bilder konstruktiv eingesetzt werden können.
In 2001 the Entlebuch and the Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn regions became, of their own initiative, so-called model regions for sustainable development. This thesis addresses questions such as: "Why did local people vote for these projects?" "What role did printed images play in their decision-making?" "How did the project leaders present the concept of sustainability to the public?" The analysis of the role of pictures in the social construction of space is a relatively new field of research in social geography. The research had a transdisciplinary approach, and results were presented to the local population in form of an interactive exhibition. Besides quantitative content analysis of all relevant visual images using categories of space appropriation, qualitative methods such as semiotic case studies of selected pictures and qualitative interviews with representatives of image producers and the image audience were applied. Results show that in contrast to the clichéd representations of outsiders, the regions, particularly the Biosphere Entlebuch, were not depicted as nature space, but rather as a modern economic and living space. A nature conservation project would have had no chance of being accepted, due to historical context of a nation wide protection of moores after 1987. In that light the role of images in participatory processes cannot be underestimated. Consequently the thesis makes recommendations regarding the use of images in similar projects.
