The spelling of the Erfurt glossary

Seiler, Annina (2019). The spelling of the Erfurt glossary. In: Nievergelt, Andreas; Rübekeil, Ludwig. 'athe in palice, athe in anderu sumeuuelicheru stedi'. Raum und Sprache: Festschrift für Elvira Glaser zum 65. Geburtstag. Heidelberg: Universittsverlag Winter, 525-540.

Abstract

This paper investigates the graphemic representations of /w/ and /þ/ in the Erfurt glossary. The glossary belongs to a group of early Anglo-Saxon glossaries, most notably the Epinal and Corpus glossaries, but it was copied c. 820 in Cologne by a scribe who was probably a native speaker of Old High German. This scribe introduced various changes to the language and orthography of the vernacular material, many of which reflect his Continental origin. Based on a quantitative analysis of the spellings for /w/ and /þ/ in the Erfurt, Epinal and Corpus glossaries, the paper reconstructs the spelling system of the archetype of the three glossaries and traces the orthographic development of each extant manuscript.
