Abstract
Summary
Goal Conflicts and Work-Life Balance
The fact that a lack of work-life balance is closely connected to a lack of satisfaction with life might not be surprising, considering the current state of research on this phenomenon. However, in the present study the widely discussed topic work-life balance was examined more differentiated from the perspective of psychology of goals. An online questionnaire carried out on more than one hundred Swiss employees from the service sector generated three central findings. First, it showed that different types of conflict correlated with judgements on satisfaction in different areas of life. Secondly, it turned out that this relationship is mediated through motivational and social factors - both one's subjective rating of goal progress as well as the support by the family are important links for the relationship between goal conflicts and dissatisfaction. Finally, personal selfmanagement-competencies can minimize or increase one's experience of goal conflicts. For the advisory context it can therefore become helpful to recognize the predominant conflict type of the employees because different measures to support a work-life-balance are meaningful.
