The discovery of Europe in the South Pacific: travel writing, "boundary work", and the construction of European identity

Frank, Michael C (2005). The discovery of Europe in the South Pacific: travel writing, "boundary work", and the construction of European identity. In: Procházka, Martin; Pilný, Ondřej. Time refigured: myths, foundation texts & imagined communities. Prag: Litteraria Pragensia, 162-175.

Abstract

This essay reconstructs the appearance of the signifier "Europe" in late eighteenth-century travel writing, arguing that Europe was "discovered" in the South Pacific. In the travelogues of explorers like Georg Forster, internal European boundaries separating different nations tend to shift out of focus the moment the author is confronted with a non-European other. Accordingly, this essay emphasizes the importance of "boundary work" in the discourse about Europe as an imagined community, arguing that the imagination of Europe first took place outside of Europe, when the external boundaries of "Europe" became tangible.
