Abstract
The vast corpus of 14th century charters, composed by Piet van Reenen and Maaike Mulder will be used as input for a phonological atlas of 14th century Dutch, not dissimilar to Berteloot (1984) on 13th century phonology, and the Phonological Atlas of Dutch Dialects (FAND) on late 20th Century data. However, using data from 14th century charters in order to make a dialect atlas raises this question: Can we extract information with regard to phonological change from non-standardised spelling? We will try to partially answer this question by investigating 14th century (Dutch) spelling variation in western Germanic consonant cluster *sk. In doing so, we will also be presenting a mapping format for these data.
