On the deformation of an elastic wire by one or two heavy disks

Aissani, A; Chipot, M; Fouad, S (2001). On the deformation of an elastic wire by one or two heavy disks. Archiv der Mathematik, 76(6):467-480.

Abstract

We consider the deformation of an elastic wire that supports two identical heavy disks rolling freely on it. One can expect that the equilibrium position of these two disks is such that we have them stabilized in the middle of the wire at the same level. In fact, we show that this result fails when the weight of the disks is large.
