Ludwig in Anglo-Saxon sources

Timofeeva, Olga (2023). Ludwig in Anglo-Saxon sources. In: Marti Heinzle, Mirjam; Thöny, Luzius. Swe gamelith is: Studien zur vergleichenden germanischen Sprachwissenschaft: Festschrift für Ludwig Rübekeil zum 65. Geburtstag. Heidelberg: Universitätsverlag Winter, 121-131.

Abstract

This essay discusses the etymology of the proper name Ludwig and other related names and traces their use in Anglo-Saxon written sources (charters and historical texts) as well as in coin data. It comes to the conclusion that in England the name was generally borne by foreigners, while its spread was possibly obstructed by the association of the prototheme with the negatively-connoted term hlōþ ‘band intent on plunder’.
