Schrift und Notation

Büchi, Romain (2011). Schrift und Notation. Germanistik in der Schweiz (GiS), 8:85-136.

Abstract

The main question that is being addressed in this article is how writing relates to language. However, no direct answer is given. Instead, the author begins by sketching the received view of the relationship in question which basically consists in reducing writing to a mere representation of speech. He then tries to show that the received view is fundamentally mistaken. As a consequence, a radically different approach to systems of written signs, i.e. notations, is proposed. Finally, this new approach is exemplified by a semio-syntactic analysis of various counting notations.
