Abstract

This study proposes a framework for visualizing the conceptual representation of affective words used in literature as a semantic space. It is difficult to define the meaning of words that express human sensibility and emotions, as they can often be subject to varying interpretations even when using the same vocabulary. Furthermore, the usage and meanings of words are constantly evolving. To capture the worldview expressed by affective words, it is necessary to consider both the intension and extension of those words, and design a semantic space based on them. In this paper, we discuss the effectiveness of the proposed semantic space by comparing the interpretations of the terms wokash and aware in the literature of the Heian period, such as Makura no Soshi and Genji Monogatari, as well as examining expressions of emotional changes in the literature of the Kamakura period, such as Utatane and Izayoi Nikki.
