Abstract
In this article, we discuss the strategy, found in several Slavic languages, of using different inflectional endings to mark masculine nouns referring to male persons as well as parts of speech that agree with or are anaphorically related to these elements. We first provide an overview of the terminology and definitions which are used to refer to this phenomenon in Section 2. Sections 3 and 4 are then dedicated to the most important cases of the genus virile in Slavic. The paper ends with a brief note on the origin of the genus virile in Section 5.
