Zenons Paradoxien der Bewegung und die Struktur von Raum und Zeit

Ferber, Rafael (1995). Zenons Paradoxien der Bewegung und die Struktur von Raum und Zeit. Stuttgart: Steiner.

Abstract

The monograph (1981) shows that a fundamental paradox (that a line consists of infinitely many points) underlies all four paradoxes of motion: the runner, Achilles and the Tortoise, the Arrow and the Stadium. By the dissolution of the fundamental paradox, all four paradoxes of motion disappear. The second edition (1995) contains a postface, which gives a reply to P.K. Feyerabend, K.R. Popper, W.R. Knorr, J. Mansfeld and others who have discussed the book. The postface defends the following theses: (a) The paradoxes have not to be solved, but dissolved by elimination of their common source, the so-called fundamental paradox. (b) The fourth paradox, the stadium, has been misunderstood by Aristotle and has to be reconstructed in a new way. Half the time equals the whole because the two rows both have to traverse an infinite number of points.
