Abstract
Plato’s “Apology of Socrates”, that is “Defence of Socrates”, belongs to the masterpieces of the philosophical world literature and has been translated into all languages of cultural significance. Since Matthias Claudius (1740–1815) and Friedrich Schleiermacher (1768–1834), Plato’s “Apology” has been translated again and again into German and is one of the basics of a humanistic education. Great texts have to be translated anew; that is, their meaning has to be recovered again for every new generation. The present book contains such a new translation. A short commentary offers indispensable explanations and the afterword presents some results of the latest research.
