Abstract

The focus of this thesis is the investigation of forests using fully polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (SAR). The main goal is to describe mechanisms and parameters that influence the measured backscatter. To that end, methods were developed that relate structural vegetation parameters to observables of a fully polarimetric SAR system. To evaluate the methods and to formulate and test hypotheses, an additional method was developed to realistically simulate SAR data. Preserving a physically correct formulation, simulated backscatter
