For a long time, Romansh literature was seen as an « orbis pictus raeticus », an illustration of the people to counteract decay. The focus was on its indigenous nature and on group identity. Literary and cultural crictic academic Iso Camartin speaks of a « temporal shifting » of Romansh literature in relation to the larger European literatures.
